Friend breaks down giving evidence about night Nicola died

The friend of Nicola Furlong broke down in court in Japan today as she re-lived the night her friend was killed.

On the third day of the trial in Tokyo over the death of the 21-year-old foreign exchange student from Wexford, the friend (who cannot be identified) recounted how they both attended a concert in the Japanese capital.

Her friend told the court she cannot remember the taxi journey to the hotel where Nicola was found unconscious before she died.

Irish Times Tokyo correspondent David McNeill, who was in court today, said there was disagreement between the witness and the defence over the amount of alcohol she and Nicola consumed.

"The defense is trying to portray the two women as having drunk heavily on the night," he said.

"The witness accepted that she had quite a few drinks, but said she had never had any experience of falling unconscious after drinking (and) neither had Nicola Furlong. She thinks she was given something after or during the second drink."
