The Taoiseach Brian Cowen has said the State's immediate priority is to restore water supply to those left without following last week's devastating floods.

Brian Cowen - who's touring the worst affected areas - said the Cabinet will discuss humanitarian assistance tomorrow to those whose homes and properties have been destroyed.

Around 50,000 people living in Cork city have been told that they'll have no running water until next weekend at the earliest.

The army, navy, Gardai, and City Council have been working flat out to provide an alternative supply for both drinking and sanitation.

The Taoiseach didn't rule out a compensation package.

Extra water supplies are being provided at locations across the city to enable people gather enough to provide basic sanitation.

But Valerie O'Sullivan from Cork City Council has said engineers have only just got access to the water treatment plant that was flooded.
