The inquest into the death of a baby girl found stabbed to death in a laneway 32 years ago will open today.

The body of the newborn baby was found wrapped in newspaper and a black plastic bag in Dun Laoghaire in 1973.

A post-mortem examination revealed that the child had died of stab wounds.

Despite a public appeal by gardai, the identity of the baby and its mother was not discovered until 1995.

A woman who had received counselling reported that she had given birth to the child at the age of 11.

Police made arrests and sent a file to the Director of Public Prosecutions but no action was taken.

The inquest on the baby girl’s death is set to open today at Dun Laoghaire Coroner’s Court.

An excavation was launched in June of this year at a house in Dalkey after the woman said she had given birth to another child, a baby boy, who had been buried in the garden there, but no remains were found.
