An investigation has been launched in Japan after an Irish student was found dead in Tokyo.

It has been reported that 21-year-old Nicola Furlong, from Curracloe in Co Wexford, had been in the country as part of an exchange programme since October.

The DCU student had gone to a concert on Wednesday night, and was found dead in a hotel room in Tokyo yesterday morning.

Police in Japan are investigating the circumstances of her death, and a spokesman for the Department of Foreign Affairs said that Nicola's family is receiving consular assistance.

Dublin City University said that it is liaising with the Irish Embassy in Japan, and has expressed its sympathy to Nicola's family.
