A new documentary has revealed that an attempt was made to attack the US President Ronald Reagan, during his historic visit to Ireland.

Today marks the 28th anniversary of President Reagan's trip to his ancestral home of Ballyporeen in Co Tipperary.

Thousands lined the streets of the village to welcome the US President that day - but it has emerged in a new Tipp FM documentary that one spectator tried to attack him with what's believed to have been broken glass.

"It was on his approach to the stage along with his wife the security people were surrounding him," said Tipp FM station manager Fran Curry.

"And then this incident happened that caused them to cover him in some way so much so that his wife got isolated, in fact, from him for them to make sure of his safety.

"This was all over in minutes, and then he continued on to the stage, where he made his speech on the day."
