Fine Gael has unveiled former runner Eamonn Coghlan as its newest member.

Fine Gael has unveiled former runner Eamonn Coghlan as its newest member.

The three-time Olympian and former world champion was one of the Taoiseach's nominees to the Seanad and has been an Independent Senator since last year.

Mr Coghlan has said no decision has been made on whether he will run in the next General Election, but he said he wants to show his true colours.

Mr Coghlan said: "I made the approach and as a matter of fact I have only applied to join as a member of the Fine Gael Party.

"Hopefully, I will be accepted. When I spoke to the Taoiseach, we never spoke about party politics; we never spoke about Fine Gael; we never even spoke about any issues in politics at all.

"I just like what I see and I decided if I am going to be serious from here on, I think I had better do it with the Fine Gael Party."
