The Irish Red Cross has added its voice to those calling for the immediate release of an Irish-born aid worker who was kidnapped in Iraq yesterday.

Margaret Hassan, the local head of the charity Care International, was abducted while on her way to work in Baghdad yesterday morning.

Ms Hassan, who was born in Dublin and raised in Britain, is married to an Iraqi man and has been living and working in Iraq for 30 years.

David Andrews, the chairman of the Irish Red Cross, said today that he believed the kidnappers made a mistake and could release Ms Hassan when they realised who she was.

"It's an assumption based on experience and hopefully she will be released in due course," he said.
