The Taoiseach Bertie Ahern has said the people of Ireland owe a huge debt of gratitude to the various religious communities who have worked in the country throughout its history.

The Taoiseach Bertie Ahern has said the people of Ireland owe a huge debt of gratitude to the various religious communities who have worked in the country throughout its history.

Mr Ahern said religious orders had laid a solid foundation over the decades, providing education and equal opportunities that ultimately helped to develop Ireland's prosperity.

The Taoiseach made the comments during an address to the Irish community in Rome today.
