Union accuses Cowen over politicians pay rise

Newly-formed union Unite has claimed Minister for Finance Brian Cowen has lost all credibility following the recent pay rises for civil servants and politicians.

Newly-formed union Unite has claimed Minister for Finance Brian Cowen has lost all credibility following the recent pay rises for civil servants and politicians.

The union has accused Cowen of lecturing workers on the dangers of rising wages while accepting a 12% pay rise himself.

It has now demanded a level playing pitch for all wage increases.

Unite regional secretary Jimmy Kelly has said inflation must be factored in to the next wage round.
