Seven arrested in garda operation
Seven men have been arrested in a series of raids on a gang suspected of being behind 70 crimes in the last year.
Ten homes across Laois and Carlow were searched and one gun, complete with silencer and scope, and a small amount of cannabis plants were recovered, gardaí said.
Dozens of break-ins and hold-ups have taken place across Carlow, Kilkenny, Tipperary and Wexford over the past 12 months and include ATM robberies, thefts of cars and plant machinery and criminal damage, as well as burglaries at people’s homes.
More than 60 gardaí from the south eastern region, the Regional Support Unit, detectives from the National Bureau of Criminal Investigation and Customs officers were involved in the morning raids.
Two men aged in their teens, four in their 20s and one in his 30s were arrested.
They were detained under section 50 of the Criminal Justice Act, 2007, at Carlow, Kilkenny, Thomastown, New Ross and Thurles garda stations and can be held for up to seven days.
