Boyd leading in Munich
England’s Gary Boyd, runner-up in the Italian Open two weeks ago, raced into the early lead at the BMW International Open in Munich today.
While world number three Martin Kaymer began with back-to-back bogeys and remained two over par after eight holes, world number 161 Boyd reached the turn in a five-under 31 and then added another birdie at the 432-yard first.
On six under the 24-year-old from Banbury was two in front of Dutchman Tim Sluiter.
Kaymer was playing with American star Dustin Johnson and defending champion David Horsey.
They were both one under, Horsey hitting back from an opening double bogey six at the 471-yard first.
Paul Casey, who missed the cut at last week’s US Open, and Retief Goosen were also one under, while the later starters included Sergio Garcia, Bernhard Langer, Colin Montgomerie, Francesco Molinari and Henrik Stenson.
Among the Irish, Gareth Maybin was on level par on seven holes after double bogeying the fifth.
Shane Lowry, Peter Lawrie and Damien Mc Grane are all underway later.
