Man convicted of mother's rape

A Dublin man has been convicted of raping his 65-year-old mother four years ago.

The 45-year-old has been remanded in custody ahead of sentencing in October.

The jury took four hours and 20 minutes to convict the 45-year-old of raping his mother, by a majority of 10 to two.

During the trial, they heard the 45-year-old admitted having sex with his mother at her house on the evening of Mothers Day in 2008.

However he claimed the sex was consensual. He said they had a drink and danced, and one thing “led to another”.

This was a retrial after the jury did not reach a verdict in the previous trial.

The accused has been placed on the sex offenders register and remanded in custody until sentencing on October 1, when victim impact evidence will be put before the court.
