A British man was killed today when a Jordanian gunman shot at a group of foreign tourists visiting the Roman Amphitheatre in Jordan’s capital Amman.

Six others including two Britons and a Jordanian police officer were wounded, said Interior Minister Eid al-Fayez.

Police overpowered the gunman at the scene and arrested him, said government spokesman Nasser Judeh.

Al-Fayez said the casualties included the British man who died, plus two other wounded Britons and the Jordanian police officer. In addition, one Dutch, one Australian and one New Zealander tourist were all wounded.

Al-Fayez said he could not immediately say whether the wounded were men or women.

Judeh said the wounded were taken to a nearby state hospital.

The attack took place in broad daylight as the tourists visited the popular attraction in Amman’s bustling downtown district.
