An Bord Pleanála is holding an oral hearing today into plans to build a €242m private hospital in the grounds of Cork University Hospital.

The Beacon Medical Group received planning permission for the project earlier this year, but an appeal was lodged because of concerns about additional traffic.

The 185-bed hospital is part of the Government's controversial co-location plan, aimed at freeing up beds at public hospitals.

Critics of the plan are due to hold a press conference later to reiterate their opposition to the scheme.
