The Prison Officers Association is calling on the Minister for Justice to reconsider the possible closure of Shanganagh open prison.

The Minister hinted in a recent interview that the young offenders institution may be closed.

The POA say the Shankill open prison should remain open.

The Prison Officers group have been requesting clarification from Minister Michael McDowell but have received no answer or meeting.

Spokesman Eugene Dennehy says the closure of Shanganah prison would lead to more young offenders being placed in adult prisons.
