A substantial number of Leaving Cert students reportedly decide to opt out of higher level papers on the day of their exams.

Reports this morning said figures released by the State Examinations Commission showed that almost 2,300 students switched from higher level maths papers to ordinary level papers on the day of their exam last year.

A further 1,900 students also switched from ordinary level maths to foundation level on the day of the exam.

The SEC said figures for other exams were not yet available.
