A man found shot dead on waste ground could have been killed up to two days before, gardaí believe.

The man, thought to be the latest victim of gangland feuding in Dublin, was missing for three days before he was found.

A post-mortem examination showed he had been shot twice in the head with a handgun.

Although gardaí have identified the man, his name will not be released until relatives have been informed.

The dead man was discovered with his head covered in the Finglas suburb of the capital, close to an area of drug gang activity.

The body was located at lunchtime yesterday by a gardaí search team in a part of Finglas known as the Trench. A number of burnt-out cars and other rubbish lay nearby.

Gardaí set up a murder investigation headquarters in the area and issued a plea for assistance from the public – though they acknowledge that local people might be afraid to approach them.

Detective Inspector Brian Sherry said: “We believe people may be in fear in the Finglas area. However, we wish to assure them that we are there and we will meet these people head on.

“We’re not afraid of them. We’re prepared to tackle these people. But we do need the assistance of members of the public.”

He added: “I believe in the past months there has been a number of incidents in the area which have caused fear and the criminals who are operating in that area are working on the fear aspect of this.”

More than a dozen people have died in gangland murders in Dublin over the past two years and there have been several other shootings, most linked to rows over drug dealing territory.

The latest victim was thought to have been shot dead at the spot where his body was found.
