Publicans to get free reign on drink prices
Publicans will be free to raise the price of drink within two weeks.
The Government will not be renewing an order which has kept prices stable for six months, however there is a warning to publicans not to abuse their new found freedom.
The Maximum Prices Order was introduced as part of Government efforts to control inflation, it also ensured that drinkers would not be subjected to price hikes over the six month period.
However, in nine days time that order comes to an end and it is understood that there will be no extension, effectively giving publicans an opportunity to raise the price of a pint.
There is a warning though from officials who say the situation will be carefully watched to ensure that there is no sudden jump in prices but that bars, clubs and restaurants also pass on the recent VAT reduction to customers.
If there is a price hike then Tom Kitt, the minister responsible, would be free to introduce a new order at any time.
