Congratulations poured in today from Northern Ireland Secretary of State Paul Murphy for a Newry climber who has conquered Mount Everest.

Terence ‘Banjo’ Bannon from Newry joined New Zealander Jamie McGuinness as they reached the summit of Mount Everest, taking nine hours to climb the final 500 metres.

Northern Ireland Secretary of State Paul Murphy led the congratulations.

In a message to the team he said: “This is a tremendous achievement for Newry climber Terence Bannon, New Zealander Jamie McGuinness and their team of supporters.

“They have displayed remarkable drive and determination in conquering their goal and should be warmly congratulated.”

The success by the first Northern Ireland team to scale the mountain came at the last moment – their climbing permits were about to expire and there would have been no further chance.
