USI 'assured' fees won't be introduced

Students representatives have said they have received assurances third level fees are unlikely to be re-introduced this year.

Students representatives have said they have received assurances third level fees are unlikely to be re-introduced this year.

The Union of Students in Ireland, which have been campaigning against the move, says the proposal has been postponed due to delays in the timetable for a review of the entire college support structure.

USI President, Colm Jordan, says students and their families can breathe a sigh of relief for now at least.

"From talking to Government sources we find out the actual administrative detail that would have to go into employment fees and the political exertions that are being exerted," he said.

"We know that there will not be loans or fees introduced for the next academic year and this is a real victory, not for students, but for families out there who are trying to get their children into third level education and are scrimping and saving."
