Campaigning will intensify today ahead of Thursday's by-election in Donegal South West.

Six candidates are vying for the seat, which was vacated by Pat The Cope Gallagher in June of last year.

With only five more days left before the by-election, political party big guns are making the trip to Donegal to join their candidates' campaigns.

The Taoiseach Brian Cowen will join Fianna Fáil's candidate Senator Brian O'Domhnaill on a visit to Arainn Mór.

Fine Gael's candidate Barry O'Neil will be campaigning in Donegal Town, joined by party leader Enda Kenny and finance spokesman Michael Noonan.

Labour Leader Eamon Gilmore will campaign with Frank McBrearty and the North's Deputy First Minister Martin McGuinness will join Sinn Féin candidate Pearse Doherty.

The two independent candidates are Thomas Pringle, an elected member of Donegal County Council, and hotel owner Ann Sweeney.

The seat has been vacant since June 2009 after Pat The Cope Gallagher took his seat in the European Parliament.
