NDSC reports 22% increase in HIV infections

The National Disease Surveillance Centre has revealed that 364 cases of HIV were diagnosed in Ireland last year, a 22% increase on the figures for 2001.

The National Disease Surveillance Centre has revealed that 364 cases of HIV were diagnosed in Ireland last year, a 22% increase on the figures for 2001.

The NDSC said just over half of the new cases were among people born in sub-Saharan Africa.

Some 231 of the newly-diagnosed cases were among heterosexuals, a 34% increase on the previous year’s figures.

A total of 46 of the cases were among homosexual men, a 37% decrease on the 2001 total, while 50 were among intravenous drug users, compared to 38 last year.

The NDSC said it received notification of 12 AIDS cases last year, bringing the total number of AIDS cases in Ireland to 731.

Four AIDS-related deaths were also recorded, bringing the total Irish death toll from the disease to 369.
