An elderly woman has been killed in a road collision involving three cars in Co Galway.

An elderly woman has been killed in a road collision involving three cars in Co Galway.

The incident happened at around 5pm on the R446 near the village of Kilreekil.

The 80-year-old victim, who was driving one of the cars, was pronounced dead at the scene, while the driver of a second car – a woman in her 30s – was injured.

She was taken to Galway University College Hospital to be treated for her injuries, which were not thought to be life-threatening.

The occupants of a third car were unharmed in the crash.

The road was closed to traffic and forensic collision investigators were deployed to the scene.

Gardaí in Loughrea have appealed for witnesses.
