A video, posted on Youtube, showing a large group of students singing, shouting and kicking bags of rubbish late at night highlights the misery residents of Magazine Road face at least two nights a week.
The video was taken on Thursday night, October 15, and posted onto Youtube by the Magazine Road Residents’ Association.
It shows a large group of students, believed to be from UCC, standing on walls and in the front garden of a house loudly singing and kicking bags of rubbish along the road.
Cork City Councillor, Paudie Dineen, said the video gives a graphic example of the misery residents face at least two nights a week by the actions of students who show no regard for their neighbours.
Magazine Road is in the vicinity of UCC and Cllr Dineen said the university needed to control its students even when they are off campus as incidents of anti-social behaviour were now commonplace in the settled communities around the campus. A spokesperson for UCC said they had been made aware of the incident.
“The university does not condone any form of anti-social or illegal behaviour and complaints received will be dealt with thoroughly via the University’s procedures laid out in the Student Rules.
“UCC and the UCC Students’ Union are committed to working on an on-going basis with An Garda Síochána and local residents to find solutions to these kinds of challenges. Examples of innovation in this area include support for CCTV cameras in the College area (partnership with An Garda Síochána and the City Council) and the student community support programme which is in place during Freshers’ week and Raise and Give week.”
