A viable pipe bomb was this afternoon found and dismantled on Cork city's northside.

A viable pipe bomb was this afternoon found and dismantled on Cork city's northside.

Builders working in a premises on Hillgrove Lane, off Watercourse Road found the device next to a house and alerted gardaí.

Gardaí attended the scene and called in the Army's Explosives Ordnance Disposal unit (EOD) at about 3.20pm.

A cordon was put in place around the scene and nearby houses were evacuated.

The EOD dismantled the device on site and are handing it over to gardaí as part of their investigation into the incident.
