The Minister for Health Leo Varadkar has said progress is being made in recruiting more doctors to the HSE, with almost 600 more doctors and dentists employed compared to this time last year.
He said many former agency staff, locums and temps had accepted proper contracts.
Minister Varadkar is launching a Medical Careers Day for interns and students in the front lobby of The Print Works, Dublin Castle this morning.
The event is a joint initiative by the HSE and the Medical Council and is designed to attract more medical professionals to take up work here.
Minister Varadkar will join professor Eilis McGovern, HSE national programme director for national doctors training and planning, and representatives from the Medical Council and Forum of Postgraduate Medical Training Bodies to launch the 'Building Your Future' event.
