Counselling is being offered to students at the University of Limerick after one of their classmates collapsed and died during a lecture.

The 22-year-old, who has been named locally as Rachael Hogan from Castletroy, became ill at around lunchtime yesterday.

A doctor and paramedics were on the scene within minutes and Rachael was taken to hospital. However, she could not be resuscitated.

Students’ union president Emma Porter said: “It is an absolute tragedy to lose someone so young. Our thoughts are with her family and friends during this terrible time.

"We would also like to remind all our students of the support services available to them on campus to help them in this stressful time.

"The chaplaincy, counselling service and our welfare office are available to all students, please do not hesitate to contact any of them.”
