Two people have died in a house fire in Co Galway overnight.

Two people have died in a house fire in Co Galway overnight.

The blaze broke out at Tom O'Donnell's flats on the Railway Road in Gort at about 3am this morning.

Two bodies were recovered from the scene and brought to Galway University Hospital, there post mortems are due to be carried out later.

One of the deceased has been identified as a 38-year-old local man. The other is believed to be of a woman in her mid-60s.

It is believed no-one else was in the building at the time.

The scene is being preserved this morning, and Gardaí are awaiting the arrival of technical experts to investigate the cause of the fire.
