TUI seeks 'urgent clarification' on teacher-training reforms

Educators' union the TUI is seeking urgent clarification on the Education Minister's announcement that teacher-training colleges are to undergo a major restructuring.

Under the plans, existing institutions will be merged into six 'Centres for Teacher Education'. There are currently 19 state-funded institutions and three private colleges.

The TUI has said it is concerned about the possible effects changes could have on union members who work in Institutes of Technology.

The union also wants assurances from Ruairí Quinn that the new centres will be located to ensure equity of access.
