Teen in court charged with murder of Lorcan O'Reilly

A teenager has appeared in court today charged with the Halloween murder of Lorcan O'Reilly in Dublin.

The 15-year-old boy, who can’t be named because of his age, has been remanded in custody for a week.

Lorcan O’Reilly was pronounced dead in hospital in the early hours of November 1 last after being stabbed at a Halloween party at the Oliver Bond flats complex in Dublin’s south inner city.

Detective Sergeant Adrian Whitelaw from Kevin Street Garda Station said he made no reply to the charge when it was put to him just after midnight.

The boy’s mother and grandmother were in court, but Judge William Hamill questioned why his father wasn’t there.

Given the seriousness of the charge, he said it would have been “entirely appropriate” for both parents to be there – to which his solicitor John Quinn said he would mention it to him before his next appearance.

Bail for those accused of murder can only be dealt with in the High Court so the boy was remanded in custody for a week.

He hugged and kissed his mother as he was being escorted out of the small courtroom.
