Children's literacy and numeracy skills are set to top the agenda at a conference of the education sector today.
The latest Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) figures show that one in six Irish adults has difficulty understanding basic written English.
The FÉILTE conference will attract over a thousand people involved in teaching across Ireland and will see examples of successful strategies in improving literacy and numeracy skills passed on to teachers.
Head of the teaching council Tomás O'Rourke says the conference aims to share new found education methods.
“It is a celebration of teaching by teachers with parents, children and the wider public. It is a celebration of the innovation teachers are leading in their practice every day in schools around the country,” Mr O’Rourke said.
“We have over a thousand people coming to the RDS here in Dublin to both showcase what they are doing, talk about it, learn about it and take home some ideas from that learning.”
