TD: 'Pros far outweigh the cons' of legalising medicinal cannabis
Cannabis could soon be legally available in Ireland for medical purposes.
TDs are going to debate a bill today allowing doctors prescribe the drug to those with serious illnesses.
The Health Minister Simon Harris has indicated he will not oppose the bill, but has suggested changes could be made before it is published.
The Independent Alliance has been given a free vote on the issue.
Deputy Gino Kenny says regulation is the key.
He said: "People are using cannabis anyway, they are buying it on the street or growing it themselves, but everything is open to abuse.
"But the pros far outweigh the cons and obviously, under our bill, the person that is ascribed any cannabis-based medicines, they are the only user of it."
