Taoiseach: Refugee crisis 'a human catastrophe'

Taoiseach Enda Kenny has described the plight of refugees coming to Europe as "a human catastrophe".

But the Taoiseach has stopped short of a commitment to increase the numbers who would be considered for asylum in Ireland.

Speaking in Paris after a meeting with President Francois Hollande, the Taoiseach said the images of Syrian toddler Aylan Kurdi had provoked "shock and rage" around the world.

He said there could be nobody on the planet who would not be moved by the photographs that had emerged in the last 24 hours.

Elsewhere, an Irish MEP says that the Europe's response to the migrant crisis has been appalling.

Brian Hayes says that the EU needs to introduce a quota system for each member state to accept refugees and that having an opt out puts pressure on other countries.

The Fine Gael MEP added though that Europe cannot have an open door policy and that a large number of migrants are trying to get access to Europe for economic reasons.

The European Commission is expected to publish a list of countries next week that it is safe for refugees to return to with a view to providing support to those who genuinely have to flee their country.
