Taoiseach: Ministers will not get free vote on abortion

It appears Independent Ministers might not be given a free vote when the Dáil considers an abortion Bill next week.

The Independent Alliance wants a free vote next week when the Dáil is asked to vote on an opposition Bill to repeal the 8th amendment in a referendum.

However, this evening Taoiseach Enda Kenny said the entire Cabinet needs a collective response on anything that is mentioned in the Programme for Government.

"I'd remind you that the Oireachtas, both the Dáil and the Seanad, have already voted to implement what is contained in the Programme for Government - that is to set up a Citizens' Assembly to discuss the questions and the implications of change, if any, or analysis of the 8th amendment," he said.

"And that work is now proceeding under the direction of Ms Justice Laffoy of the Supreme Court."
