Taoiseach appeals to Gardaí to begin talks and avert strike action

Enda Kenny's issued a new appeal for Gardaí to begin talks with the government to avert planned strike action next month.

The overwhelming majority of Gardaí will be unavailable for work on each Friday in November due to action by the GRA and AGSI.

Today in the Dáil Enda Kenny insisted Gardaí could not be offered a special arrangement outside the Lansdowne Road pay deal.

But he's reminded Gardaí of the special role they play in Irish society: "This is a very serious situation and the Government take it very seriously.

"Nobody wants to see a situation where An Garda Siochana are not on public duty as the only link between criminal activity and the safety of citizens."
