The people in charge of the SUSI grant system have said they have learned from last year's problems experienced by students and say processing of this years applications is on track.
The student grants body said it has completed "on schedule" its initial assessment of all first-time applications received before the August 5th deadline for priority processing.
Last year, thousands of students were forced to wait for their grants to be processed due to delays of up to six months.
Caroline Erskine, Spokesperson for SUSI, said this year's sucess is down to a number of changes to the system.
She said: "They opened the application system earlier, there are fewer documents required to be furnished by the students this year, because SUSI has data-sharing arrangements with other Government departments.
"So that on behalf of the student applicants, departments can directly give SUSI information."
