'Super property tax' proposed for larger houses

People who own large houses could have to fork out more for the upcoming property tax.

According to the Irish Independent, the Government is considering imposing a so-called 'super property tax' on those with large, expensive homes.

An expert report on a property tax was handed over to the Environment Minister Phil Hogan last month.

It is understood that one of the proposals being considered is a "super property tax" which would see the rate of the tax levied rise in bands, dependent on the value of the property.

The thinking behind the plan is that it would make it easier to sell the tax to the public if the wealthy were seen to have to pay more.

However, it will be cause for concern among those who have stretched themselves on an expensive property and have already paid stamp duty.

The final decision will not be made known until December's Budget.
