Snow in April? Irish weather prepares to exact revenge

Come on - you didn’t think this warm, sunny weather would last too long did you?

Snow in April? Irish weather prepares to exact revenge

We’ve all been enjoying the unseasonably good weather lately.

But it’s time to put away those sunglasses I’m afraid – we’ll be back to some of the more traditional Irish weather from today onwards – and there's even the outside chance of some snow!

As you’ve probably noticed, things aren’t quite as balmy as they have been of late.

If it’s not damp and grey where you are right now, it soon will be.

If you were planning for a sunny trip to the beach this weekend, you can pretty much forget it.

There’ll be a bit of sunshine in places, but temperatures are going to take a tumble.

The south looks set for some particularly nasty rain on Saturday evening too.

By the time Monday comes along, overnight temperatures across the country are forecast to plummet to freezing or near-freezing levels.

A few forecasters are even saying that there's some snow on the way for counties in the north and northwest.

Metrogroup is more measured in its outlook for Monday, but still maintains that “some snow is possible, mainly over the hills”.

The rest of us can still expect some fairly cold conditions, thanks to some fresh westerly to north-westerly winds, with a bit of rain thrown in for good measure.

The potential for snow could continue into Tuesday.

According to Exactaweather.com: "The first part of the working week … will also be cold enough for some of these showers to turn to snow across parts of the north, in particular, across higher ground. There is also the risk for some sleet and snow showers to develop at some much lower levels in … certain parts of Ireland at times within this period."

Metrogroup isn’t so sure, but insists it will remain “very chilly” in general and that “showers will be heavier and more frequent over northern and western counties”.

Looking ahead, it's set to remain fairly cool and unsettled, with daytime temperatures struggling to reach double figures.

According to Exactaweather.com: "The majority of April is likely to see temperatures ranging at near to below average for many, with some further incursions of cool northerly and easterly winds.

“Unfortunately, there is no sign of a 'heatwave' or any 'prolonged periods' of widespread warm temperatures as of yet."

Oh well, it was good while it lasted, eh?
