A 23-year-old man has been given a six and a half year jail term for causing the death of cyclist in Kerry almost three years ago.

42-year-old Paud O’Leary from Leamyglissane, Gneeveguilla was found dead on July 1 2012. He had been knocked from his bike while training for a charity cycle.

Shane Fitzgerald from Newmarket, Co Cork had pleaded not guilty to the charge of dangerous driving causing death, but was convicted by a jury at Tralee Circuit Criminal Court last month.

Judge Thomas E O’Donnell today suspended the final 18 months of Fitzgerald's sentence.
