The Sisters of Mercy have confirmed they are not attending a meeting with the Education Minister Ruairi Quinn this afternoon to discuss compensation for victims of abuse.

In a statement, the sisters said they sought a meeting with the Minister on their own and would not attend a meeting as part of a group of 18 religious groups.

The Sisters of Mercy say they have offered €20m to an independent fund, as well as properties valued at €11m.

Ruairi Quinn has previously said the offers by the religious groups fall short by several hundred million euro.

The group said that there was no agreement between the State and the 18 religious congregations that the costs of the Redress Scheme would be evenly split.
