Shatter puts Principal Officer in Dept of Justice in charge of charities authority

The Minister for Justice Alan Shatter has appointed the first Chief Executive of the new Charities Regulatory Authority.

Úna Ní Dhubhghaill is currently serving as a Principal Officer in the Department of Justice and Equality, and she takes up her new role from today.

The Charities Regulatory Authority is being established to increase public trust and confidence in the management and administration of charitable trusts and organisations.

Under its remit the body will be responsible for investigating and ensuring the accountability of charities.

The Minister for Justice has assigned Ms Ní Dhubhghaill as the first Chief Executive, while an initial staff of ten are also set to be appointed.

Ms Ní Dhubhghaill is a graduate of Trinity College and holds a Masters in Applied Governance from the Institute of Public Administration in UCD.

The authority will have an independent Board chosen by Alan Shatter.

Selection of board members will be based on an examination of the expressions of interest received and a short-listing of the most suitable applicants.

Alan Shatter has described the move as a step towards the framework needed to increase transparency and accountability in the charities sector.

The Charities Regulatory Authority is due to begin operation later this year.
