Samaritans helpline goes free-to-call

The Samaritans helpline is now free to call on 116 123.

This new number replaces the exisiting low-call number, making it possible for people to access the service at any time, day or night, totally free of charge.

The change is part of the European Commission's plan to reserve all numbers beginning with 116 for services of social value.

Demand for the Samaritans has grown over the last number of years, with over 2,000 volunteers now working with the charity.

Catherine Brogan, Executive Director of Samaritans Ireland, said she is thrilled they can finally offer a free service to callers in need.
