Ryanair has cancelled flights in and out of Spain today arfter air traffic controllers declared a wildcat strike.

Aer Lingus has said its services to and from Spain are facing severe disruption.

Spain says it will declare a state of emergency if the air traffic controllers do not end their strike which has paralysed air traffic for a second day and is threatening to deepen the country's economic problems.

The Spanish army took over air control towers yesterday afternoon, after the unofficial strike action grounded planes and disrupted travel for up to 330,000 people.

Madrid airport will be closed until at least 1pm today and Spanish airline Iberia has cancelled all flights until 5am tomorrow.
