Report on global women's rights calls for more female TDs

Ireland is being asked to improve its record on women's rights in Government.

A report being launched this morning by Plan Ireland shows there is no country in the world where women have the same rights as men, when it comes to earning power, education and political influence.

Millions of women across the world are victims of abuse and violence, often at the hands of their partner.

Plan Ireland is a children's rights charity, who are currently running a campaign focused on women's rights titled "because I am a girl".

25 women were elected to the 166 seats during the 2011 general election, and Plan Ireland's Mike Mansfield says Ireland needs to improve its level of women in parliament.

"When we look at power, ourselves here in Ireland haven't exactly done particularly well," he said.

"Globally, women make up about 22% of parliamentarians, where there's just 19 female world leaders. If you look at that … in the Irish context, that 22% drops to 15% of parliamentarians … here in Ireland, [we] definitely have some work to do."

Plan Ireland's report also shows that millions of women are victims of abuse and violence, often at the hands of their partner.

Mansfield said that is a particular problem in some African countries, where violence can affect up to 29% of women.
