Recycling increases by almost a third at Christmas

Wrapping from presents and increased volumes of food stuffs contributes to 25,000 tonnes of recycling at Christmas.

Wrapping from presents and increased volumes of food stuffs contributes to 25,000 tonnes of recycling at Christmas.

That is enough paper to save a forest 200 times the size of Croke Park and enough aluminium cans to reach from Dublin to New York when lined up.

Overall, around 30% more recycling is created over Christmas.

Panda Recycling spokesperson Paul O'Doherty says they are putting measures in place to help their customers deal with the increase.

He said: "At Panda last year we saw a 20% increase in the amount of recycling at Christmas, so this year we'd like to help our customers recycle more.

"If Panda customers are struggling for space in their green bin at Christmas time, they can securely leave extra items for recycling in clear plastic bags beside their green bins.

"There is no extra charge and it's our way of saying thank you to our many loyal customers and encouraging them to recycle this Christmas."
