Prince Charles set to begin visit to Ireland

Prince Charles will visit Ireland today in the latest royal bid to solidify transformed Anglo-Irish relations.

The day of engagements in Co Donegal comes a year after Charles' emotional trip to neighbouring Co Sligo to tour the harbour village where his great uncle, Lord Mountbatten, was murdered by the IRA in 1979.

The symbolic steps taken by the heir to the British throne has come in the wake of the Queen's historic visit to Ireland in 2011, when she became the first monarch to set foot in the country for a century.

In one of the first engagements of the day, the Prince and Duchess of Cornwall will visit a tweed factory in Donegal Town.

Charles will then travel to the Letterkenny Institute of Technology to meet local entrepreneurs and learn more about the institute's cross-border programmes. Camilla will also visit a local school.

In their last engagement, the couple will visit Glenveagh Castle, where they will tour the gardens and meet local school children.

The trip to Co Donegal comes after a two day visit to the North.

Yesterday, Charles toured an Orange Order museum.

The engagement in Loughgall, Co Armagh was in keeping with the overall royal visit's theme of promoting understanding of Ireland's differing traditions.
