Postmasters' Union to reveal plans to save post offices

The Irish Postmasters' Union will launch a six-point plan this morning to save post offices across the country.

The organisation is hoping that this list of proposals will secure and develop the future of the postal service.

Ned O'Hara, general-secretary of the IPU, has said one option would be for people to use the post office for electronic payments, such as motor tax.

"We're not Luddites, we're not trying to stop people using technology - but a lot of people don't and a lot of people would like the option of paying in the post office. A lot of people would like the option of supporting their post office by making their payments in the post office," said O'Hara.

"We would like to see and we would encourage people who currently get their payments electronically through the banks to consider using the post office - which is free of charge to them but it also supports the community."
