Post-mortem due on Limerick man found dead after interrupting burglars

A post-mortem is due today on the body of a man found dead in his home after, it is believed, interrupting burglars at the scene.

Following the incident, Fianna Fáil's spokesperson on Justice has criticised the Government for what he claims is a serious under resourcing of An Garda Síochána.

Deputy Niall Collins' comments follow the death of 62-year old carpenter John O'Donoghue in Doon, County Limerick.

Mr O'Donoghue is believed to have suffered a heart attack yesterday afternoon after discovering his house had been burgled.

Two men remain in custody in connection with the incident and a Garda investigation is ongoing.

Deputy Collins is a TD for the area where Mr O'Donoghue was found dead.

He claims the garda who apprehended two suspects near the scene used his own car, as there were no patrol cars available in the area.

The local garda station had been closed, along with many others, in the last few years.

"Doon was one of the 139 garda stations that were closed by this government," Collins said. "It was such a stupid policy. In this day and age, we need to resource the members of An Garda Síochána appropriately - particularly in rural Ireland."

Mr O'Donoghue's body was brought to University Hospital Limerick where a post-mortem examination is due later today.
