Poll shows less than half of voters intend to pay water charge

Less than half of respondents to a recent poll said that they intend to pay the water charge.

The Irish Times has carried out an Ipsos MRBI poll on Irish voters, which found that 48% of 1,200 voters polled said that they would pay it.

Some 33% said they would not pay it, with 11% undecided. The remaining 8% said it did not apply to them.

Wealthier voters are likely to pay the charge, with opposition to it coming from the lower end of the wages scale.

The poll shows that those who own their own house are more likely to pay than those who rent.

The poll also shows that a government decision to cap the charges appears to have encouraged some who did not previously intend to pay, to change their minds.

The poll has margin of error is plus or minus 2.8%.
