Plans to give Dubliners vote on electing mayor likely to be dropped

Plans to give Dublin a directly elected mayor are set to be dropped without being put to the public.

Councillors in Fingal are expected to veto the proposal to transform local decision-making.

The four councils will decide this month whether to put the idea to a vote of Dublin residents in May.

If any one of them votes against holding the referendum, the proposition will be dropped.
